Brother Paul West
Master Street Magician
Lecture

I am truly excited about being considered to lecture to magicians in your area. After all the years, 31 and counting, of performing magic on the streets, at fairs, festivals and outdoor events, I have decided it’s time to give it back. I feel magic is something that anyone can do, but it is an acquired art. You can instantly learn the secret, but it can take years of study to make it a magical piece that will entertain your audience.

Since I have noticed that our “next generation” magicians are working hard to establish themselves and are searching for ways to make their magic have impact, I want to talk with them. All of them. I have a burning desire to teach what I feel are the most important elements of magic. Not just tricks, but the bread and butter of a magicians life experience. I feel by divulging the secrets I’ve learned about performing effectively I can enhance the magical lives of those who attend my lecture.

It all started on the streets in San Francisco around 1974. I figured that I could knock out a living and see the world. They chewed me up and spit me out. I didn’t accept defeat and went back for more. It was easier, but still a lot of work. It took a while, but I realized that the hard work was not going to go away. Now that that was a reality, it started to make sense. In the next several years, I did it all:

Magic Shop Owner
Stage Magician - Illusions
Festival Magic
Magic Bartender
Character Magician - Western, Renaissance
Magic Music Act

Every one of these experiences has given me the knowledge that is invaluable to any working magician that is working any venue.

Obviously, the working street magician will gain value from hearing this lecture, but it goes deeper. Close-up workers will realize how to display their art with confidence. The convention worker (walk around) will learn prop and audience management. And the stage magician will walk away with an understanding of where their magic came from and why they are doing what they are doing.

It is also very exciting for me to hear the stories of the magi’s that heed my advice and then contact me later with their stories that help me to understand what my giving to them has produced. To hear of their adventures and what they have done to twist my theories to fit their style always gets my juices going.

My lecture is a casual evening which starts with part of my street show. I tear it apart and describe the elements that make each block of the show important and explain the most important question “Why”. This over view sets the tone of the lecture.

As I progress I teach how the skills of the street performer can be translated to every form of magic performance.

This year I’m letting go of a wonderful system that will help magicians work anytime they want, indoors, without a phone call and make $100 and up for the evening. A very valuable lesson.

For the last 15 years I have used a system that I call the Show Thought Process. A form of meditation that improves every aspect of my show. It builds confidence and gives me the chance to perform the show that I’m booked for several times at the location that I’m booked for before the actual show. So when I go and do the show, it’s “Old Hat” at that point. The power of the mind is unleashed with this process and has been simplified so the magician that has not dabbled in meditation practices can benefit from the experience.

The lecture does have tricks too.

Although I feel we all have enough tricks in our arsenals to do hours of magic, I have compiled some of my favorite pieces of magic to share with my magical buddies.

Matchbook - Match Production

A Quick Match Trick

Coin on the Head

The Man From New York (Card trick by Terry LaGerould)

Ideas on the Cups & Balls

The Discrepancy Load

The Stupid Bean Trick

BP's Rope Routine

(This list does change)

And if we have time, I love to spend about 20 minutes, if everyone wants to learn, teaching the hottest version of the Rice Bowls you will ever see. This is one of my favorite street tricks. A true classic that will have your local dealer ordering Rice Bowls.

The lecture is closed with my thoughts about this crazy world that we live in and some ramblings that I feel is important for all of us performers to contemplate.

To tell you the truth, I’m coming to your town to give back some of the wonderful things that have been given to me along my journey. I want to share my experience with magicians worldwide in hopes that the true street performer will continue into the future of magic. I want to save the budding magician time by expressing my feelings and letting him/her experience through my stories along the way of the magi.

It’s a great evening. It’s a little different. I volley a lot of questions and we discuss what is important at the time. I have had lectures that last an hour, but most of the time we play for 2 to 3 hours with a break somewhere along the way.

I look forward to meeting all of you and wish you good luck and continued success.

Enjoy every precious moment!
